A Couple of Petals reviews

Posted on by .

It's been almost two weeks since I released Petals, and a couple of the sites I reached out to about the game have reviewed it.

Jay is Games gave it a good review, and the site is also hosting the game for their readers.

Petals made two appearances on Super Game Droid, first in an Indie game round-up, and then in a positive review as well.

Thanks for the coverage, and I'm glad you like the game!

Last Train to Timbuktu on the Samsung App Store

Posted on by .

Several weeks ago I was contacted by Chillingo who were interested in including Last Train to Timbuktu in the 100% Indie initiative which they are managing for Samsung. After a bit of work, I'm happy to point out that the game has now launched on the Samsung App Store.

Unlike the free-with-ads Google Play Store version, the Samsung edition is $1 up-front and ad-free. I'm hoping that the 100% Indie folks will do a little bit of PR on my behalf, which they do seem to do for some games, and that I'll get a few sales out of it.

It's particularly nice to be on the store with 100% Indie program because the app store waives their usual 30% commission, giving me 100% of the game's revenue (hence the name 100% Indie). So a big thanks to Aaron over at Chillingo for getting me on board. Hopefully Petals will also show up on the Samsung store in the next few weeks!

I'm happy to announce that my newest game Petals is now available for Android via Google Play, and for browsers via Kongregate. Both versions are free, though on Android you can choose to pay a dollar to turn off in-game ads.

Coming soon: Petals

After another long break between posts, I'm happy to announce that I have a new game nearly ready for release! It's called Petals, and it will soon be released as a Flash game for browsers, and as an Android app.

Petals is a matching game. On either a square or hex grid, clicking a grid cell pulls coloured petals toward that cell. If you pull matching petals into a cell, they're cleared from the board. The general goal of the game is to clear the board, or at least to keep it as clear as possible.

A square puzzle. A hex puzzle.

There is a special rule for "flowers": if a central cell is surrounded on all sides by matching petals, then the central cell can be any colour, and the entire group can be cleared at once. You can see an orange and green flower below:

A flower completed and one in the making.

The game has two different modes:

  • In Puzzle mode, the game generates a sequence of puzzles to solve. In each puzzle, the goal is to match all of the petals and clear the board with only a few moves.
  • In Influx mode, new petals are pulled into the board from its perimeter. You're awarded points each time you clear petals from the board - the more petals you clear at once, the more points you earn.

I'm in the final testing and tuning phases of development, so if all goes well, Petals will be "officially" released within a few weeks. In the meantime, you can play the beta version at http://greeneyedgames.ca/petals/play

Play Last Train to Timbuktu in your browser!

Well it's been a quiet few weeks on the blog. Despite my somewhat feeble marketing efforts and the generous words of a few game writers, Last Train to Timbuktu has failed so far at making me a millionaire. It has made me enough to buy a fancy coffee, though. At least if you don't count paying off expenses.

However, all is not lost. I've been hard at work for the last week or so getting the game to run in the Flash Player so that people can play it in their web browser! It seems to be working pretty well, so I've put up the beta version at greeneyedgames.ca/timbuktu/play.

The browser version, like the Android version, is completely free to play, and displays ads once in awhile.

Hopefully this will help more people find the game and try it out. I plan to get it working on Facebook, Kongregate, and other gaming sites, so it should increase my potential audience size quite a bit. Web games offer more instant gratification compared to a downloadable demo, so I'm hoping that more people will give the game a try.
